19th century
Description

Early 19th.c. walnut panetiere or bread safe c.1820. A simple example of the form with 18 turned spindles to the front and sides between straight rails. Small door in the front with a twist catch attached to the knob. Pine top and back panel with holes in the rear for fixing to the wall. Missing a portion of the shaped bracket inside the right hand front foot. Otherwise very good original colour and condition. Cleaned and waxed in our workshops.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A panetiere is a traditional French provincial food cabinet, designed specifically to store and ventilate freshly baked bread while protecting it from pests.

These cabinets were constructed using dense hardwoods such as oak, chestnut, or fruitwood, featuring mortise and tenon joinery alongside turned wooden spindles to allow air circulation.

Authentic 19th-century pieces feature hand-turned spindles, visible pegging, original iron or wooden fittings, and natural patination from decades of handling.

A bread safe serves as a low cabinet or side storage unit in a rustic kitchen, hallway, or dining space, offering historical texture alongside functional storage.

Dust the timber regularly with a dry cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, keeping the cabinet away from radiators to prevent wood shrinkage.
