Culvertons has dated these Mahogany Swivel Desk Chairs to the 19th Century.
As the original trade label states (see image), they were manufactured by George Bartholomew & Co. (1850 - 1882) based in Finsbury and Coleman Street in London. Antique furniture that carries a maker's name is often manufactured to a higher standard than unnamed pieces, this is the case with these partner's desk chairs. Why partners? A partner's desk is double-sided and can accommodate two people (partners) working on it simultaneously, and to add to the symmetry yet further, a pair of desk chairs would have been also commissioned. However, over the ensuing years, the majority have been separated, leaving few true pairs from this period. Now they have been sympathetically restored these rare survivors are ready to grace your office, study or library.
