Description

An attractive oval majolica vase attributed to the Florentine workshop of Ulisse Cantagalli, c.1880. The elongated body stands on a stepped foot and is fitted with sculptural serpent-form handles. Painted with swirling orange and yellow florals against green foliage, the piece displays the lively Renaissance revival palette associated with Cantagalli’s famed production. A rooster signature is painted on the underside.

Ulisse Cantagalli established his Florentine workshop in the late nineteenth century, specialising in high-grade revivals of Renaissance maiolica. The pottery achieved international acclaim for recreating historic Italian tin-glazed designs, glazes, and decorative motifs.

Majolica is constructed from earthenware clay coated with an opaque white tin glaze. Metallic oxides are painted onto the unfired glaze before undergoing a high-temperature firing, resulting in rich colours fused into the surface.

Authentic Cantagalli pieces generally feature the workshop mark on the base, which depicts a stylized cockerel or rooster. Additionally, genuine items exhibit characteristic tin-glaze texture, hand-painted metal oxide pigments, and Renaissance-inspired sculptural elements such as serpent handles.
