Description

Interior designers are often looking for a carpet to define the space they are decorating. This handsome room-size Serapi carpet has that appeal. The colours are subtle and harmonious with an impressive open design which would work equally well in period and contemporary settings. Note the archaic drawing of the medallion and ivory spandrels. Also unusual is that the field and border have the same abrashed terracotta shades, very elegant. One could imagine this carpet enhancing a drawing room, study or even a bedroom. Finely knotted with zero warp depression and single-wefted, it is an excellent example of the North-West Persian carpet weaving in the last quarter of the 19th century. In good condition with some old well-executed repairs. Professionally cleaned in our workshop, and ready for immediate use.

Serapi carpets originated in the Heriz region of North-West Persia during the 19th century, characterised by spacious geometric medallion designs, broad spandrels, and high-grade wool dyed with natural pigments.

These carpets feature hand-spun wool pile knotted onto a durable cotton warp and weft foundation, created using traditional hand-knotting techniques with vegetable dyes.

Authentic pieces show irregular hand-spun yarn variations, natural dye colour variations known as abrash, a flexible handle, distinct geometric central medallions, and age-appropriate wear along the selvedges.

The strong geometric motifs and warm terracotta tones anchor modern open-plan living spaces, pairing effectively with contemporary minimalist furniture or classic traditional timber pieces.
