Quiet Street Antiques of Bath has dated this piece to the 1900s.
She is bare-breasted but wearing an ornate necklace and a striped headress incorporating a rearing cobra, called the Uraeus.*
The young lionesses are tethered by chains, one resting, the other standing , whilst the group is assembled on a large pattered carpet. Signed with Bergman seal and the word “Geschultz” impressed in the carpet. c1900. 21cms wide; 15cms deep; 14cms high.
The “Uraeus” was a stylised element of a rearing cobra which represented royalty; divinity and protection. It was tradtionally worn only by a Pharaoh or his wife. The rearing cobra was meant to spit fire and venom at the pharaoh’s enemies, therefore offering fierce protection.
