This is a magnificent pair of Georgian pillar and prism cut ship''s decanters dating from the beginning of the 19th century, c1805, and probably originating in Ireland from the Waterford glasshouse. The pattern to which they are cut complete with the shape of the neck and pouring rim appears in Phelps Warren - Irish Glass in plate 96 which shows the Samuel Miller - Waterford Glass House Patterms from the period, albeit applied to a cylinder decanter as were all the patterns. The Waterford glasshouse was also well known for its prism and pillar cutting.The decanters are in excellent condition for their age. This means, of course, that they show age related wear and tear commensurate with some 200 years of use. The decanters are cone-shaped and are decorated with prism cutting to the necks and with pillar cutting to the bodies. Pillar cutting is notoriously difficult and the decanters are a testament to a master craftsman. They necks are panel cut. The bases are star-cut...
