A striking late 19th-century Japanese porcelain dish with cloisonné enamel decoration. The everted rim is painted in underglaze blue, while the central roundel displays butterflies, floral motifs and scrolling foliage in richly coloured enamels. A fine example of Meiji-period craftsmanship.

Historical Background

Meiji artisans produced decorative wares of exceptional quality for export, often combining cloisonné enamelling with porcelain bodies to achieve vivid and detailed surfaces.
