George II Cuban Mahogany Demi-Lune Fold-Over Tea Table with Twin Swing-Out Drawers, c.1750
A fine mid-18th century George II demi-lune fold-over tea table in richly figured Cuban mahogany, dating from around 1750.
Beautifully proportioned and executed in high-grade timber, the table features a shaped demi-lune top that opens to form a circular surface supported by its original swing leg. The frieze incorporates two rare curved drawers that pivot out from either side — a desirable and unusual feature associated with better London and provincial workshops of the period.
The piece stands on four slender cabriole legs, each with crisp acanthus carving to the central knee and tight inner scrolls. The colour is particularly good — a deep, mellow tone characteristic of early Cuban mahogany — with an even, well-preserved 18th-century patina.
A refined, practical and highly decorative example of early Georgian furniture.
Dimensions (approximate):
Width: 76 cm (29 7/8 in)
De
...pth (closed): 37.5 cm (14 3/4 in)
Depth (open): 75 cm (29 1/2 in)
Height: 73.5 cm (28 7/8 in)
Condition:
In very good, honest condition for its age, retaining its original structure, legs, drawers, hinges, handles, locks and a working key. The table is sturdy, opens correctly, and sits evenly.
Hinged swing-leg support: The rear gateleg hinged swing-leg support is likely a later (19th-century) replacement but is secure, functional and appropriate in style.
Veneer repairs: There are areas of veneer re-laid on the frieze. These appear to be the original veneers, re-adhered where they had lifted — matching fragments were found inside the drawers. These repairs are sympathetic and stable.
Surface: The top shows dents, scratches and small marks consistent with age and use over nearly 275 years, but no patches, no major losses and no replaced timbers on the top.
Drawers: Both swing-out drawers are entirely original, including linings and brasswork, and open smoothly.
Legs: All legs are original with no replacements, major warping or structural repairs.
Overall, a well-preserved and highly presentable example, clean and ready for use. As with all genuine 18th-century furniture, minor surface wear should be expected and contributes to its authenticity.
