Antique Victorian Inlaid Rosewood Pier Cabinet

19th century
Description

A smart, elegant antique rosewood pier cabinet with inlays, gilt metal mounts and ebonised edging.

In good original condition this display cabinet retains the original hand drawn glass and sits on four turned feet. Within, the interior which has two shelves, has been given a sympathetic refresh with F&B India Yellow.

Notably, this cabinet is made in rosewood (walnut was more commonly used) which further adds to its appeal.

These cabinets were originally intended for use in entrance halls, and drawing rooms where they stood between two windows, similar to a console table, with sculptures or artwork placed on the top, and fine decorative items dispayed within.

They still function wonderfully as display cabinets and also as bookcases.

English, circa 1880.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Pier cabinets originated in the 19th century, designed specifically to fit the narrow section of wallknown as a pierlocated between windows in Victorian drawing rooms and parlours. These cabinets were crafted to showcase valuable collections, books, and decorative objects behind glass doors.

Victorian craftsmen constructed pier cabinets using rich hardwoods such as rosewood, walnut, or mahogany, often finished with decorative marquetry or parquetry inlays of boxwood or ebony. Ormolu mounts made of cast brass or bronze, along with velvet or silk interior linings, were frequently included.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut joinery, period-correct glass with slight distortions, hand-chased brass mounts, and genuine rosewood veneers displaying distinctive grain patterns. Inspecting the back boards and drawer bases for natural wood shrinkage and original hand-cut dovetails can confirm period age.

A Victorian pier cabinet can serve as a focal point in a hallway, home office, or living room, offering modern functionality as a curated display for ceramics or books. Combining dark wood antiques with contemporary artwork or neutral walls balances classical craftsmanship with contemporary aesthetics.

Keep rosewood furniture out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources to prevent the wood from fading or veneer adhesives from lifting. Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the wood moisture and finish.
