Description

A pair of antique French bellows with original leather and brass stud work. These fireside bellows are decorated to the front with a charming scene of a shepherd boy with his sheep in a classical landscape. The reverse has a beautiful gold design of foliage, flowers and swags on a black ground. The bellows are in good working order.

The compact size and charming decoration make these French bellows particularly attractive. A great item to enhance the fireside or display as an unusual decoration.

Hand bellows were developed as practical hearth tools designed to deliver controlled blasts of air to ignite or revive domestic fires. From the seventeenth through nineteenth centuries, decorated examples were frequently produced both as functional fireside equipment and decorative household items.

Traditional bellows typically feature two carved wood boards hinged with a supple leather diaphragm, secured along the edges with brass studs or tacks. Air forced through the chamber exits via a tapered turned brass or iron nozzle at the tip.
