Antique George IV Gonçalo Alves & Amboyna Marquetry Sarcophagus Tea Caddy C1825

Description

Here we have a very rare and exquisite antique George IV Gonçalo Alves and amboyna marquetry inlaid tea caddy, which dates to circa 1825.

It is of sarcophagus form and has been beautifully detailed with superb marquetry decoration of Gonçalo Alves and amboyna. Gonçalo alves is the name given to several species of Astronium, a tropical hardwood and is sometimes referred to as tigerwood, a name that underscores the wood's often dramatic, contrasting color scheme, that some compare to rosewood.

The lid lifts to reveal an arrangement of two beautifully decorated removable lidded canisters which will have been used to store the tea and a cut glass mixing bowl to the centre. The caddy is raised on bun feet.

A lovely feature is that it is complete with original working lock and key.

This really is a rare outstanding tea caddy which would make a wonderful centre piece or addition to any collection.

DIMENSIONS: The approximate MAXIMUM dimensions are : 14 inches / 35.5 cm wide x 7 1/8 inches / 18 cm deep x 7 1/8 inches / 20 cm high

CONDITION: The tea caddy is in excellent antique condition just odd age marks commensurate with age and use as would be expected. The cut glass mixing bowl is original but has a crack to the bottom (please see final photograph).
