Set 4 Antique Vanity Fair Spy Prints Men of the Day

19th century
Description

A set of 4 antique Vanity Fair “Men of the Day” framed prints mounted and glazed in glossy black frames, these antique prints are a good collection to bring a little satirical humour to your wall.

Vanity Fair was a weekly magazine published in Britain from 1868 to 1914 and offered a satirical take on Victorian society, publishing articles on fashion, current events and the latest scandals. A full-page color lithograph caricature of a contemporary celebrity or dignitary appeared in most issues, and it is for these caricatures that Vanity Fair is best known today. The primary artists were Carlo Pellegrini “Ape” and Leslie Ward “Spy”, and it is because of the latter artist as to why these prints are often collectively referred to as “Spy Prints”.

This set of 4 includes:

“Men of The Day No.19”, A caricature portrait of professor Huxley originally published on January 28th, 1871 in Vanity Fair. By artist Carlo Pellegrini “Ape”.

In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Published in the British weekly magazine Vanity Fair between 1868 and 1914, these full-length satirical caricatures featured prominent figures of the Victorian and Edwardian eras, including politicians, artists, royalty, and sportsmen.

These prints were rendered using colour chromolithography, a process where images were etched onto stone plates and printed layer by layer using oil-based inks onto medium-weight woven paper stock.

Authentic prints feature original publication dates printed at the top margin, along with titles such as Men of the Day or Statesmen, and contain recognizable artist signatures or monograms like Spy (Leslie Ward) or Ape (Carlo Pellegrini).

Arrange them as a structured grid or gallery wall within a hallway, study, or library. Pairing traditional chromolithographs with clean, modern frames helps bridge the gap between historic charm and contemporary design.

Display prints away from direct sunlight to prevent fading of the delicate coloured inks. Ensure the use of acid-free mounting boards and UV-filtering glass to protect against yellowing and foxing over time.
