Fine Silk Embroidered Suzani, Bokhara, Circa 1860, 1.27m X 0.94m

19th century
Description

Finely embroidered in silk on a linen background, this delightful small Bokhara Suzani from Uzbekistan has the hallmarks of a genuine dowry piece. The directional floral design in the field flows elegantly through the lattice of serrated leaves. Note the variety of floral ornaments which makes it so eye-catching, but also reveals the skill of the embroiderer. The generously wide border repeats the theme of flowers within a lattice format. All the colours are lovely, especially the burnt orange, greens and fuchsia. Note the gold outlining to the ornaments which gives the composition a very light appearance. Note also the touches of a pale yellow in the details. It’s all very lovely. Cherished over the generations, this piece has survived in excellent condition. Lined.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Bokhara suzani is a hand-embroidered textile originating from the Bukhara region of Central Asia. These textiles feature intricate floral and botanical motifs worked in silk thread on cotton or linen grounds, traditionally created as part of a brides dowry during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Traditional suzanis were embroidered using naturally dyed silk threads on handwoven cotton or linen foundation strips. The strips were embroidered separately by family members before being stitched together to form a complete decorative panel.

Authentic 19th-century suzanis typically exhibit narrow composite fabric panels, hand-spun foundation cloth, natural vegetable dye colour variations, and traditional stitching techniques such as tambour or chain stitch and basma couching.

An antique suzani can be mounted as wall-hung artwork, draped over upholstered seating, or displayed at the foot of a bed. Mounting the textile on an acid-free fabric frame protects the delicate fibres while accentuating its colour and pattern.

Preserving antique silk textiles requires keeping them away from direct sunlight and high humidity. Cleaning should be undertaken exclusively by professional textile conservators, and items displayed on walls should be supported evenly without direct adhesive or metal fastenings.
