Vanity Fair was a weekly magazine published in Britain from 1868 to 1914 and offered a satirical take on Victorian and Edwardian society, publishing articles on fashion, current events and the latest scandals. A full-page colour lithograph caricature of a contemporary celebrity or dignitary appeared in most issues, and it is for these caricatures that Vanity Fair is best known today. These prints are by Leslie Ward known as “Spy” or sometimes “Drawl”. Sir Leslie Matthew Ward was a British portrait artist and caricaturist who over four decades painted 1,325 portraits which were produced as watercolours and then turned into chromolithographs for publication in the magazine.

“Ladysmith” Men of the Day. No. 780. a caricature of Field Marshal Sir George Stuart White (1835–1912), a distinguished British Army officer who was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions during the Second Anglo-Afghan War. This caricature was published to mark the sitter’s return to London after commanding the defence of Ladysmith, in the Anglo-Boer War. Originally published on 14th June 1900 in Vanity Fair.
