An Exceptional Oak Tinder Box - Complete

18th century
For Sale by Opus Antiques
Description

This is a rare late 1700s/early 1800s antique oak tinder box a beautiful example. Complete with the steel, flint and damper lid.

Unusual to find these boxes in wood. The steel and flint would be used to create a spark in the box, which would light a piece of wood/ taper to then light a candle. This is done in the smaller section of the tinder box known as a hearth. The lid or damper would be used to put out the sparks hence the build up of carbon within the box. Most tinder boxes are metal as wood was not the ideal material to create a spark in.

One of the best examples of a tinder box that I have seen.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A wooden tinder box was a essential hearthside container used to hold tinder, flint, and steel for starting fires prior to the widespread invention of friction matches.

Traditional tinder boxes were constructed from durable native hardwoods such as oak, elm, or fruitwood, as well as metals like sheet iron, brass, or pewter.

Authentic pieces show natural wear patterns around edges, hand-cut joinery, a dark oxidised patina in recessed areas, and smooth interior surfaces from historic use.

These functional objects make distinct decorative accents when displayed on a fireplace mantelpiece, open bookshelf, or coffee table alongside contemporary ceramics.

Keep the timber clean using a dry microfiber cloth, and apply a small amount of high-grade beeswax polish annually to preserve the grain without disturbing the surface patina.
