We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian landscape paintings typically feature naturalistic depictions of rural British scenery, depicting agricultural life, rustic cottages, and dramatic weather patterns. Artists emphasised atmospheric lighting, detailed foliage, and romanticised natural vistas using layered oil glazes and textured impasto.

Artisans in the 19th century primarily painted with ground pigment mixed with linseed oil on linen or cotton canvas stretched over wooden stretchers. Surfaces were frequently prepared with a gesso priming coat, and paintings were protected with natural varnish coatings such as dammar or mastic.

Authentic pieces usually display natural craquelure across the paint surface, historic oxidation on the reverse side of the canvas or wooden stretcher, and period-appropriate stretcher construction such as wooden keys. Examination under ultraviolet light can also reveal old varnish layers and historical retouching.

Pair the artwork with modern minimalist furniture to create visual contrast, or group it alongside other period artworks on a gallery wall. Accent lighting positioned above the painting helps highlight textural brushwork and deeper colour tones in classical dark wood or modern settings.

Dust the surface gently using a dry, soft-haired brush, avoiding commercial chemical cleaners or water. Keep the artwork away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and heat sources, and consult a professional conservator for varnish removal or structural canvas repairs.
