Antique Scottish Tapestry Needlepoint Scotland Mourning 1860

19th century
Description

Amazing antique Scottish tapestry in gilt frame tat measures almost six feet wide - 180 CM

The subject is based on the famous oil painting 'Scotland Mourning' which was originally painted by F. Hartwich

It shows Mary of Scotland mourning over a dying Douglas after the Battle of Langside (1568)

The Battle of Langside was fought in 1568 between the forces of Mary, Queen of Scots and those of the Regent Moray

Langside was a colossal defeat for Mary. Only one of Moray's men was killed, whereas over 100 of Mary's men were lost

After this Mary was exiled to England never to return to Scotland again

The details to the needlepoint are incredible and this would have taken some time to craft

Dramatic scene with an epic cast of characters

Such a great, unique piece we date to circa 1860

Due to it's size the piece is heavy and is a unique chance to own a rare piece of Sottish history

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Popular during the 19th century, Victorian needlepoint tapestries, often associated with Berlin woolwork, were hand-embroidered panels created using coloured wool yarns on canvas grounds, depicting historical, religious, or narrative scenes.

These artworks were traditionally hand-stitched using dyed wool and silk threads onto a sturdy linen or cotton canvas mesh, then mounted into heavy wooden or giltwood moulding frames.

Authentic pieces feature tight hand-stitching in gros point or petit point stitches, slight unevenness characteristic of handwork, soft colour fading from historical lighting exposure, and period-appropriate framing materials.

Large framed textile art works effectively as a centrepiece above a fireplace mantel, sideboard, or console table, introducing texture, pattern, and historical character to neutral contemporary spaces.

Keep textile art away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and heat sources to avoid thread degradation and colour loss, and clean the glass and frame using a dry, soft cloth.
