Description

A richly enamelled Japanese porcelain incense burner (koro), probably from the Kutani tradition, circa 1900–1930. The square body stands on four bracket feet and is crowned by a boldly modelled shishi finial in rich translucent green glaze. All sides are filled with scenes of scholar-sages, attendants, dragons and auspicious animals among clouds and pine trees, painted in a vivid palette of iron-red, green, yellow and blue enamels with confident black linework.

The workmanship is markedly better than typical tourist wares, with expressive faces, patterned robes and rhythmic scrollwork. The enamels remain glossy and bright. A green cartouche mark appears on the base.
