Pair of Kyoto Satsuma Miniature Moon Flask Vases, Meiji Period C.1900

1900 - 1920
Description

A finely made pair of Kyoto Satsuma miniature moon-flask vases from the late Meiji period, circa 1895–1910. The flattened circular bodies stand on low feet with slender necks, forming a well-balanced and unusually well-preserved pair. Both vases are decorated with continuous riverside processions of court ladies in detailed patterned kimono, painted in soft enamels and raised gold typical of higher-grade Kyoto production.

The narrow sides are filled with alternating figural reserves and brocade panels, creating a dense decorative surface without overwhelming the primary scenes. The warm cream glaze, fine crackle and rich yet controlled gilding reflect the Kyoto export workshops of the period. Each base bears a calligraphic Satsuma inscription above the Shimazu crest.

Measurements

Height: 12.2–12.5 cm (4.8–4.9?)

Width: 9.6 cm (3.8?)

Depth: 3.2 cm (1.3?)

Combined weight: 302 g

Condition

An excellent pair with no chips, cracks or restoration under strong light and UV. One rim shows minor rubbing to the gilding; otherwise the enamel and gold remain fresh and bright. A rare survival of a fragile Satsuma form.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
