Description

A charming pair of 19th century Ashford Marble candlesticks. These candlesticks are a lovely example of this traditional local craft. The wide variety of colourful stone set around the base contrasts beautifully with the black polished marble.

The condition of the candlesticks is compatible with age, there are a few very minor nibbles, these do not detract from the appeal.

In the 19th century Ashford marble was extremely fashionable with a wide cross section of society, used for major projects in large country houses and small items in general. This continued until the source of the materials ran out in the early 20th century, hence items such as these candlesticks have become rare.

Ashford Black Marble is a fine-grained dark limestone quarried exclusively near Ashford-in-the-Water in Derbyshire, England. It gained immense popularity in the 19th century after being championed by the 6th Duke of Devonshire and exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851.

The base object is carved from dark Derbyshire limestone, whilst decorative inlays utilise varied specimen stones including malachite, lapis lazuli, baryte, fluorite, and colourful regional marbles to create geometric or floral mosaic patterns.
