Description

Silk ikats from Uzbekistan often create a spectacular vision. The large abstract forms and vivid colours can feel so modern and painterly. This is certainly the case with this large piece. Composed of five panels, interlocking hexagons in shades of fuchsia, yellow and blue, and framed by a lovely aubergine outline, vie with saw-toothed figures to dominate the composition. The result is stunning, and presents a decorative textile that can be used on the wall as well as a cover. Lined with original Russian chintz.

FAQs

Uzbek ikat, locally termed abrbandi or cloud-binding, originated along the Silk Road trading hubs of Central Asia, including Bukhara and Samarkand. These complex textiles served as symbols of status, wealth, and prestige, used for traditional robes, interior wall hangings, and ceremonial gifts.

Traditional Uzbek ikats feature silk warp threads that are repeatedly bundle-tied and resist-dyed before weaving on narrow handlooms. The resulting narrow woven strips are sewn together vertically or horizontally to create wider panels and wall hangings.

Authentic pieces exhibit narrow, hand-sewn loom widths with slight pattern misalignments where the strips meet. They also show subtle variations in dye absorption typical of natural dyes, along with characteristic blurred or feathered edges along the geometric motifs.

Large textile panels can be mounted on padded frames or hung from timber rods to create visual focus on a plain wall. They are frequently displayed above sofas, beds, or sideboards to introduce colour, texture, and historical narrative into modern rooms.
