Description

A George III oak tilt top tripod table, c1800, with an exceptionally well turned baluster pillar base and cabriole legs. The table top retains its original catch and has a lovely golden colour.

Condition: The table top has various marks that is has acquired throughout its life and a small amount of wear to the edges. The base is beautiful and a deeper colour than the top, so I assume the top has been exposed to sunlight. The catch mechanism works well. There is a slight tilt to the table so the top doesn’t sit exactly level - this is quite common with this type of table and is more noticeable in photographs than it is in the flesh.

These tables were primarily crafted from solid native hardwoods such as oak, walnut, and elm in rural regions, or imported mahogany for urban households. The construction relies on traditional joinery, including iron tilt latches, wooden block hinges, and hand-cut dovetail joints securing the legs into the central column.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-planed underside surfaces, irregular hand-cut dovetails beneath the column base, and natural shrinkage across the grain of the circular top over time. Patina, original iron catches, and hand-turned column variations further distinguish genuine 18th-century pieces from Victorian or reproduction counterparts.

A Georgian tripod table functions effectively as a versatile side table beside a armchair or sofa, offering a surface for lighting or reading materials. Positioning the piece in an alcove or corner allows its historical timber texture to contrast balanced modern upholstery and contemporary architectural lines.
