Description

Garniture of 3 late C17th/early C18th Japanese Edo period vases decorated in the Imari palette.

Comprising a pair of tall beaker vases together with octagonal-shaped baluster vase . All decorated in a matching design with alternating trellis and floral painted diapers to the necks . The bodies all decorated with further panels of alternating painted decoration featuring floral designs.

Decorated in the traditional Imari palette of colbalt ‘inky’ and pale blues , iron-reds and gilded highlights.

All in excellent original condition with no damage or repairs.

Provenance: Private collection of a gentleman, acquired in the 1980’s from the leading London dealership Guest & Gray .

A Japanese Imari garniture is a decorative set of complementary porcelain vessels, traditionally comprising three or five pieces produced during the Edo period for domestic display and export to European markets.

Imari porcelain is constructed from high-fired kaolin clay painted with underglaze cobalt blue, followed by overglaze enamel decoration in iron-red and highlights of gold gilding.

Authentic period pieces display distinct spur marks on the unglazed base, a dense translucent porcelain body, hand-painted underglaze blue outlines, and expected surface wear to the overglaze gilding and enamel layers.
