Still Life Oil Painting Of Roses By Charles Archer 1855-1931

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Prometheus Antiques

A fine oil on canvas still life depicting cut roses in a landscape setting by the artist Charles Archer 1855-1931. The work skilfully depicts the roses in brilliant colours at different angles on a rocky outcrop set against a brilliantly painted landscape, the whole shows a Pre-Raphaelite influence in the use of colour and design. The work is in excellent untouched condition and signed to the lower right with the date of 1876. There is little known of Archer’s life, he was a specialist flower painter who did exhibit at the Suffolk Street Galleries in London from 1873. He is most well known as painter on porcelain for the factory at Derby, indeed this work is marked on the stretcher as being created for the Derby Porcelain Factories where it was likely used an example of the artist’s work for customers. The painting retains the original frame which has some losses on the edges but is in overall good condition. The whole is an interesting and decorative work.
