Rare Antique Victorian Ridgways China Spoon Warmer – Circa 1890

19th century
Description

A Rare and Unusual Antique Victorian China Spoon Warmer by Ridgways, dating from the late 19th century and produced in their richly coloured "Fantasia" pattern. Designed in the form of a stylised nautilus shell, this beautifully sculpted piece served both decorative and practical functions during elegant 19th-century dining.

Decorated in a bold Imari-style palette of cobalt blue, iron red, and gilded highlights, the piece exemplifies the period's fascination with exotic orientalism and domestic refinement. The Ridgways Royal Semi Porcelain backstamp confirms its Staffordshire origin – circa 1890.

* Spoon warmers gained popularity during the mid-to-late Victorian era, when dining etiquette and tableware were at their most elaborate.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Introduced in the mid-19th century, spoon warmers were dining accessories filled with warm water to keep serving spoons heated between courses during formal meals.

Most examples were crafted from earthenware, fine china, porcelain, or electroplated nickel silver, often decorated with transfer prints, hand-painted details, or gilding.

Authentic late Victorian Ridgways ceramics generally feature maker marks or registration numbers stamped under the base, alongside characteristic floral motifs and gilt accenting.

These decorative ceramic objects can be displayed on a dining sideboard, placed inside a glazed cabinet, or repurposed as a tabletop vessel in contemporary rooms.

Clean gently by hand using lukewarm water and mild soap, avoiding abrasive cloths and chemical cleansers that can rub away delicate gilding and surface glazes.
