19th Century Anglo Indian Carved Gilt Wood Bedroom Side Chair

19th century
Description

Welcome to Mersham Manor Antiques-

A very pretty, profusely carved mid 19th century Anglo Indian chair.

c1850.

Wonderful foliate pierced carved decoration, having undulating leaves and foliage.

The circular seat is over boldly carved scroll forelegs, with out-swept back supports.

Covered with a pink velour fabric.

Made from tropical hardwood, making the chair surprisingly heavy because of the density of the hardwood.

Very skilled carving and craftsmanship has gone into this lovely chair.

Would have originally been a brown hardwood, has historically been painted a lovely mellow gold at some point.

A sweet little chair ideal for the bedroom.

In excellent antique condition, solid, sturdy and strong. Nice patination to the gold painted finish.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Anglo-Indian furniture developed during British administration in India, combining traditional European seating silhouettes with elaborate native hand-carving techniques and regional timber.

Craftsmen typically utilised dense hardwoods such as teak, rosewood, or ebony, frequently finished with gold leaf gilding, dark lacquer, and velvet or woven cane upholstery.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut joinery, deeply pierced foliate or zoomorphic motifs, structural timber variations, and age-consistent surface wear across gilded areas.

Position the piece as a standalone feature chair in a dressing room, bedroom corner, or hallway to create structural contrast against neutral backdrops and modern textures.

Dust gilded carvings gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush without liquid solvents, and vacuum velvet upholstery using a low-suction brush attachment.
