Small Old Sheffield Plated Game Cover C1830

Description

This lovely small game cover is made of Old Sheffield Plate. Bearing no makers marks but dating to c1830. With two inlaid silver cartouches, one engraved with a gothic letter 'H'. With a lovely ornate handle.

In good condition overall with slight wear due to age and use. One replacement screw to the underside and a good clean interior. Vitually no copper bleed.

Weight approx 1.1kg.

Base measures approx 33.5cm x 25cm

Developed in the 18th century, Old Sheffield Plate is a manufacturing process of fusing a thin layer of sterling silver onto a copper ingot before rolling it into sheets to construct hollowware and tableware.

Game covers were hand-raised from sheets of fused silver and copper, incorporating cast sterling silver or lead-filled handles alongside drawn wire edges designed to conceal the internal copper core.

Authentic examples feature applied silver insert shields for engraved monograms, turned wire rims hiding copper seams, and slight surface rubbing where the underlying copper shows through.

It can be placed on a sideboard top, arranged as a dining table centrepiece, or positioned within glazed cabinetry to reflect light and add metallic texture.

Wash with mild soapy water, dry thoroughly, and polish gently using a soft cloth with specialised silver polish to prevent wearing down the fused silver surface.
