Rare Early Minton Porcelain Blanc De Chine Figure of a Gundog Gun Dog C.1830

19th century
For Sale by The Fancy Fox
Description

A very fine and rare porcelain model of a dog, standing on a shaped, naturalistic, rocky base Produced by Minton, c.1830-40. Left predominantly in the white with some careful enamelling to the face and proudly wearing a gilded collar. The foot of the base is also rimmed with gilt and light gilt highlights dot the surface of the base. Superbly modelled, even with individual teeth and the inside of the mouth shaped realistically as well as the musculature and fur. The base is closed with a central open hole.

This particular figure is illustrated and documented in "Dogs In English Porcelain Of The 19th Century" by Dennis G. Rice, colour plate 210, and pages 136 and 137. Documented as a Newfoundland by Minton, but it looks like nothing of the sort, bearing much greater resemblance to a number of gundog type breeds such as various Pointers or Tollers (Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever).

It measures 12.2cm (4 3/4") long, 5.7cm (2 1/4") deep and 9.5cm (3 3/4") high.

Condition is excellent with no damage, repair or restoration and very minor handling wear.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Early 19th-century Minton porcelain figurines are characterised by their fine soft-paste or bone china body, precise sculptural modelling, clear lead glazes, and subtle hand-applied gilding, representing English ceramic production from the Georgian and Regency periods.

These figures were produced using fine bone china or porcelain clay, pressed into multi-part plaster moulds, fired, and finished with clear glazes alongside burnished gold leaf gilding and hand-painted enamel details.

Authenticity is identified through impressed or painted factory marks on the underside, period-correct unglazed foot rims, fine translucency in the porcelain body, and characteristic wear patterns on early gilding.

Small porcelain figures function as accents on mantelpieces, console tables, or curated bookshelves, paired with contemporary art or framed prints to create layered decorative contrasts.

Glazed porcelain should be dusted using a dry microfibre cloth or soft-bristled brush. Water, liquid detergents, and abrasive tools should be avoided, as moisture and friction can loosen or wear away hand-applied gilding.
