Description

Late C17th / early C18th Japanese Edo period dished porcelain charger decorated in the Imari palette.

Large Japanese charger decorated in the traditional Imari palette of dark ‘inky’ and pale blue hues , iron-reds and gilded highlights. Painted with floral designs with mythical beasts to the edges . The central circular medallion with fanned segmented design, surrounded with divided panels of further decoration.

The verso decorated to the edges with floral vignettes , having triple blue ring around the raised foot-rim and a further double blue ring within. The interior of the foot-rim having kiln spur-marks to the glaze produced when fired .

A highly decorative early Edo period charger in excellent original condition with no damage or repairs.

FAQs

Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export ceramic wares manufactured in the Arita region from the seventeenth century onwards, taking its name from the port of Imari through which it was shipped to foreign markets.

Imari wares are crafted from kaolin-based porcelain clay, decorated first with underglaze cobalt blue, fired at high temperatures, and then finished with overglaze enamels such as iron-red, green, and gold leaf in subsequent lower-temperature firings.

Authentic Edo period pieces typically exhibit spur marks on the base from kiln support, slight irregularities in glaze texture, hand-painted brushwork, and a characteristic palette combining dark cobalt blue, iron-red, and gilding.

An Imari charger can be displayed on a dark wood or metal plate stand atop a sideboard, positioned centrally on a mantelpiece, or secured using a wall hanger as part of a curated gallery wall.

To protect overglaze enamels and gilding, dust softly with a dry microfibre cloth and wash only when necessary using tepid water and gentle detergent, avoiding chemical cleaners and abrasive sponges.
