English delftware is tin-glazed earthenware manufactured in Britain from the late sixteenth century through the eighteenth century, characterised by an opaque white glaze decorated with cobalt blue or polychrome painted designs.

These items were crafted from local earthenware clay, fired once, covered in a lead glaze rendered opaque white with tin oxide, decorated with mineral pigments such as cobalt oxide, and fired a second time.

Authentic pieces feature a relatively soft earthenware body, subtle glaze pooling, typical edge chipping where the brittle tin glaze exposes the underlying reddish or buff clay, and unglazed foot rims.

A delftware charger can be displayed vertically on a plate stand atop a sideboard, arranged as part of a wall gallery in a dining room, or integrated into modern shelving alongside neutral decorative objects.

Clean gently using a soft, dry brush or a slightly damp microfibre cloth. Avoid immersing tin-glazed earthenware in water or using abrasive chemicals, as moisture can seep into crazing or raw clay edges.
