Antique Turkmen Torba, Teke Tribes, Akhal Oasis, Turkmenistan, Central Asia.

19th century
Description

This fabulous Torba (personal belongings bag) was made by Teke Turkmen tribes in the Akhal Oasis, Turkmenistan, during the first half to middle 19th century.

It is in amazing, complete condition with its original ivory wool, plain-weave back. The face of the torba in glowing madder-red contains four vertical rows of three Teke 'guls' (tribal crests) and quite unusually retains its original tassels at the base of the bag.

This torba is amongst the very best of early Teke work with highlights of magenta silk within the guls and in the border.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Turkmen torba is a traditional small, shallow woven storage bag created by nomadic tribes in Central Asia for holding domestic items inside yurts or during transit.

Authentic torbas are hand-knotted using wool dyed with natural pigments on a wool warp and weft structure, often featuring high knot counts and intricate geometric tribal motifs.

Authentic Teke pieces feature characteristic Teke gol motifs, deep red or mahogany field tones, fine knotting density, and hand-spun wool construction with traditional fringe details.

A tribal torba can be mounted and framed as textured wall art, draped over a bench or sideboard, or incorporated into a gallery wall to add historical colour and visual depth.

Vacuum gently using suction only without a rotating brush, keep away from direct sunlight to prevent colour fading, and consult a specialist textile conservator for professional cleaning.
