Large Rockingham Porcelain Flower Encrusted Basket Landscape View Isle of Wight Needles C.1835

19th century
For Sale by The Fancy Fox
Description

A stunning large Rockingham porcelain ornamental basket with entwined rustic handle. Of elongated, octagonal shape with moulded leaves covering the surface of the ends, the details all edged in gilt. Beautiful, intricately modelled flowers, leaves and buds decorate the canted edges and the sides of the handles To the centre, framed with a gilded leaf vine, is an exceptionally well painted seascape of The Isle Of Wight Needles with various sailboats and a small rowing boat to the foreground. The centre of the handle is gilded with further gilt accents down the sides and the basket is finished with a gilt rim.

Marked to the reverse with the named view "The Needles, Isle Of Wight", painted in red enamel. No factory mark, c.1830-1842.

References: Rockingham 1745-1842, Alwyn & Angela Cox, plate 240 and colour plate 108 for similar baskets with different landscapes.

It measures 30.7cm (12 1/8") long, 12.8cm (9") wide and 11.5cm (4 1/2") high.

Condition is excellent: there is just a fine glaze hairline around the lower part of one handle. No damage, repair or restoration other than the usual minor losses to some of the petals. The gilding on the handle has been been refreshed. The handle has been thoroughy examined with a variety of techniques and is guaranteed not to have been damaged or repaired. The fine line to the lower handle is not a crack through the structure, it is restricted to a crack in the glaze only, probably linked to the overall fine surface crazing which is usual for this manufacturer. Very minor handling wear to the raised enamels and gilt, and no discernible wear to the central scene.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Produced in Swinton, Yorkshire, Rockingham porcelain gained fame in the early 19th century for its elaborate decoration, intricate encrusted flowers, and finely painted landscapes. Production peaked during the Georgian and William IV periods before the manufactory closed in 1842.

Artisans sculpted delicate porcelain flowers and foliage individually by hand, attaching them to the unfired clay body before baking. The piece was then glazed, fired, hand-painted with enamels, and detailed with gilded accents.

Authentic Rockingham porcelain often features soft-paste porcelain bodies, intricate applied floral work, high-quality botanical or landscape enamelling, and distinctive red or printed griffin marks, though many items were issued unmarked.

A decorative porcelain basket functions as a refined focal point when positioned on a sideboard, console table, or mantelpiece alongside understated contemporary ceramics to highlight its intricate colours and textures.

Dust the delicate applied floral elements gently using a soft, dry artist brush or air duster. Avoid submersing encrusted porcelain in water or using liquid cleaners, as moisture can weaken ceramic joints and harm gilded details.
