Antique Silver Boar Head Walking Stick Cane Duchy Luxembourg 19thc 101cm/39.5"

19th century
For Sale by Regent Antiques
Description

This is a beautiful antique German silver Boar head pommel handled walking stick, dated 1889.

The striking stick features a highly detailed boar head silver handle with superb detailed cast decoration on a gently tapering ebonized wood shaft with its original brass ferrule.

It is inscribed Weihnachen 1889 (Christmas 1889) with a crown oak tree and monogram (The Order of the Oak Crown, of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg).

The Order of the Oak Crown (French: Ordre de la Couronne de chêne, German: Eichenlaubkronenorden, Luxembourgish: Eechelaafkrounenuerden) is an order of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.

The Order of the Oak Crown remained a solely Luxembourgish honour; subsequently, the Netherlands established the Order of Orange-Nassau instead.

Since the accession of Grand Duke Adolphe, the order has been primarily used as an award for Luxembourgish citizens, although membership has occasionally been conferred on foreigners, mainly on members of foreign royal families or on eminent foreigners with Luxembourgish ancestors.

Add an extravagant element to your daily life with this wonderful walking cane.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A novelty top walking stick features a decorative pommel sculpted into thematic forms, such as animal heads, figures, or emblems, which gained wide popularity during the nineteenth century.

Nineteenth-century walking sticks frequently combined silver or brass handles with dense hardwoods such as ebony, malacca, or stained beech shafts.

Authentic pieces typically feature maker marks or silver purity stamps along the collar, period-correct hand-chasing, and original oxidisation within carved details.

Walking sticks can be displayed inside a cast iron or porcelain hall stand, styled beside a console table, or mounted horizontally on a wall in a study.

Silver handles should be polished gently using a soft microfibre cloth and specialized silver cream, ensuring moisture does not soak into the wooden shaft.
