Chelsea Late 18th Century Candlesticks “Summer” and “Autumn”, C.1775–1783

18th century
For Sale by Ritas Bazaar
Description

A late 18th-century pair of Chelsea candlesticks depicting Summer and Autumn, produced during the manufactory’s final independent years. These compact and well-modelled figures continue the established Four Seasons tradition and show the mature Rococo vocabulary still in use at Chelsea during the 1770s–1780s. The gilt scrollwork, applied foliage and expressive putti reflect the factory’s long-standing sculptural repertoire.

Summer holds a sheaf of wheat and originally a sickle, while Autumn carries grapes beneath a vine wreath. Comparable examples are represented in the V&A, the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Bowes Museum.

?

Measurements

• Summer: Height 20.7 cm (8.15?); Width 14 cm (5.51?); Depth 13.5 cm (5.31?); Weight 925 g

• Autumn: Height 20.5 cm (8.07?); Width 14 cm (5.51?); Depth 13 cm (5.12?); Weight 913 g

?

A well-preserved decorative pair. Summer has a restored left arm, a missing bocage element at the back and the original sickle is now lost. Rubbing to the gilding. Autumn shows loss to the little finger and a small loss to the tree trunk. Both display very well with strong colour and form.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Chelsea porcelain was produced by the Chelsea Porcelain Manufactory in London, established around 1745. During the later Gold Anchor and Chelsea-Derby periods (17591784), the factory produced elaborate Rococo figural candlesticks featuring allegorical subjects, classical deities, and pastoral figures framed by scrolling acanthus leaves and boscage.

These candlesticks were made using soft-paste porcelain, moulded in separate sections, and assembled prior to firing. Decoration involved overglaze enamel painting applied by hand and finished with mercury gilding on the intricate Rococo scrollwork and candle nozzles.

Authentic pieces often feature a small painted or impressed anchor mark, such as the gold anchor used during the late eighteenth century. Additional markers include soft-paste translucency, visible fire cracks or glaze tears typical of early kiln technology, and detailed hand-gilded scrolling.

Pairing eighteenth-century figural candlesticks on a minimalist fireplace mantelpiece or a polished timber sideboard creates a striking focal point. Placing them against a neutral backdrop highlights their complex silhouettes and polychrome enamelling.

Dust regularly using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to prevent dirt accumulation in carved details. Avoid submerging in water or using harsh chemical cleaners, as moisture can penetrate hairline cracks and abrasive materials can strip delicate overglaze gilding.
