Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A portico clock garniture is a three-piece decorative timekeeping set featuring a mantel clock styled with architectural columns resembling a classical portico, flanked by two matching side pieces such as urns or vases. Popular during the 19th century in France, particularly during the Louis Philippe era, these sets served as prominent centrepieces on fireplace mantels.

These clocks typically feature a framework constructed from fine hardwoods like rosewood, kingwood, or mahogany, often ornamented with marquetry or parquetry inlays. The mechanical movements were usually brass eight-day mechanisms housed alongside gilt-bronze capitals, bases, pendulum bobs, and dial bezels.

Authentic 19th-century French portico clocks generally feature stamped brass movements with maker marks or serial numbers, hand-cut gear teeth, and original gilt-bronze pendulum bobs with intricate cast detailing. Examining the wood veneer reveals natural ageing, minor shrinkage lines, and hand-cut marquetry rather than modern printed inlays.

Positioning the complete three-piece set along a focal mantelpiece, credenza, or grand sideboard creates symmetrical balance in a room. Pairing the wood marquetry and gilt metalwork against contemporary neutral backdrops highlights the architectural silhouette of the columns and flanking urns.

Keep the set in a temperature-controlled environment away from direct sunlight, central heating vents, and high humidity to prevent veneer lifting or wood movement. Dust the wooden casing gently with a soft microfibre cloth, avoid harsh liquid polishes on inlaid surfaces, and consult a horologist for mechanical movement maintenance.
