L.m.s. Railway Fusee Dial Wall Clock, Superb

19th century
For Sale by Clockwise
Description

I am delighted to offer another great example of a genuine fusee railway clock from the London Midland and Scotland railway, originally dating from the 1890s. This was previously a London & North Western Railway (1846-1922) clock until 1923 when this railway was amalgamated into the L.M.S as a result of the 1921 Railway Act. There is a mark to the rear of the dial detailing a repair in 1915 (please see photos).

The wire-driven fusee eight day movement has rectangular plates with an anchor escapement and has been fully overhauled so benefits from my three year guarantee.

The eight inch dial is in lovely condition and has been fully and tastefully restored with 'L.M.S. 11252' applied to it as found on the dial prior to restoration. The clock retains its original hands and the bezel locks securely into a tab.

The one piece turned mahogany surround has fantastic colour and patination since its restoration. The circular surround is pegged to the back box in the classic manner with the usual latched side inspection door and lower regulating door and the LMS brass plaque is applied to the right side of the case with new screws in very old holes.

This is a super rare and original clock in gorgeous condition and it’s one of many fusee and railway clocks I have for sale with many more coming.

Clockwise specialises in longcase and bracket clocks and with clients from the world of business, film, sport, royalty and aristocracy - yet more than happy with traditional clients - Clockwise has an unrivalled reputation for excellence and superb service.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A railway fusee clock is a precision mechanical timepiece used by historic railway companies to maintain synchronized time across stations and signal boxes, driven by a cone-shaped pulley mechanism to regulate spring tension.

These clocks are typically constructed with solid mahogany or oak cases, cast brass glass bezels, hand-painted iron dials, and heavy brass internal clockwork movements.

Authentic examples feature specific company markings printed on the dial, matching stamped brass serial badges on the side of the wooden case, and company property stamps on the movement or backboard.

Position the clock as a central focal point above a console table, desk, or fireplace mantel, complementing both traditional timber interiors and industrial aesthetic spaces.

Keep the clock level, wind the mechanism regularly using the correct key, avoid placing it near heat sources or direct sunlight, and gently clean the wooden case with natural beeswax.
