A striking and atmospheric watercolour executed by Edwin La Dell in 1945, depicting urban bomb damage, the place depicted is probably in Germany but near the Dutch border, judging from the subject of the headless statue (Friedrich Wilhelm) and the signpost pointing to Kleve (here spelt Cleve) and Goch (here spelt Gogh). in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War. The work demonstrates La Dell’s sensitive handling of light, structure and mood, reflecting his experience as a wartime artist and his interest in documenting the landscape of post-war Britain.
The painting is preserved in excellent original condition, with clear signature and date, and retains an original period label on the verso, supporting its p
...rovenance. This early work provides an insightful glimpse into La Dell’s transition from wartime documentation to his later celebrated lithographic style developed at the Royal College of Art.
