Superb Quality Pair of French Marquetry Bedside Tables

1920 - 1940
For Sale by Andros Antiques
Description

This Superb Quality Pair of French Marquetry Bedside Tables have many decorative details to enjoy. Veneered in Tulipwood with an abundance of marquetry that helps to elevate them immensely. Being of bombé design the curves of the legs and sides flow into each other seamlessly.

A rather nice feature of this pair is that not only do they each have two drawers to the front, but also an additional one to the side. The free running drawers themselves are lined in a watermark silk style fabric adding further opulence to them. The polished brass drawer knobs tie in so nicely with the ormolu mounts to the legs.

The marquetry decorated lower shelf adds further useability as does the lip to the tops to stop items rolling off. Being finished on all sides, with marquetry decoration all around, these bedsides can be placed centrally in a room if required, in fact it would be a shame to hide the beautiful backs up against a wall.

This pair of bedside tables would make a statement wherever they are placed in a room, presented fully restored ready for the home.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French marquetry bedside tables, often called tables de chevet, originated in eighteenth-century France during the Louis XV period. They are distinguished by curved serpentine outlines, slender cabriole legs, intricate wood veneer inlays depicting floral motifs or geometric patterns, and decorative brass or bronze mounts.

These tables are typically constructed using an oak or pine carcass covered with exotic timber veneers such as kingwood, rosewood, walnut, and tulipwood. The marquetry is achieved by cutting thin timber pieces to create detailed pictorial designs, which are fitted into veneer grounds and finished with clear varnish or French polish.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut joinery such as hand-dovetailed drawer construction, uneven tool marks on unexposed backings, and cast bronze mounts secured with original iron screws. Variations in timber tone, natural oxidisation on drawer linings, and hand-cut veneer edges further distinguish historical examples from modern reproductions.

These accent tables can be placed on either side of a contemporary upholstered bed to provide warmth and texture through natural timber grain. Pair them with modern linen bedding, subdued wall colours, and simple ceramic table lamps to balance traditional ornament with clean design.

Preserve the finish by dusting regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax paste once or twice a year. Keep the furniture away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to prevent veneer lifting, checking, or colour fading, and clean metal mounts using a dry cloth without harsh chemical abrasives.
