A handsome mid-19th century mahogany pedestal desk dating to around 1860, of practical proportions and traditional construction. The desk features nine drawers — three to the frieze and three on each pedestal — all retaining their original brass swan-neck handles and brass escutcheons. Each drawer is hand-dovetailed and runs smoothly.
The top has a later replacement black tooled leather writing surface, framed by a moulded mahogany edge with a rich, warm polish. The pedestals are fitted with plinth bases for stability, and the desk is finished on the back, making it suitable for use in the centre of a room.
A fine detail is the brass lock plate to the centre drawer, stamped “HOBBS & Co, London – Lever – Machine Made”, confirming the quality of manufacture and security typical of the period.
A classic and functional Victorian desk with excellent colour and character — ideal for home offices, studies, or libraries.
