Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A fauteuil is an open-arm armchair originating in 17th-century France, featuring carved wooden frames and upholstered backrests and seats. Typically associated with the Louis XV and Louis XVI eras, these chairs were designed for elegant conversation in salon settings.

Traditional French fauteuils were crafted from hardwoods such as rosewood, walnut, or beech, often featuring hand-carved floral or rococo motifs. The upholstery typically utilised textiles like silk damask, velvet, or needlepoint held in place with traditional hand-tacked techniques.

Authentic Louis XV style fauteuils are characterised by serpentine curves, cabriole legs, padded armrests (manchettes), and carved floral or shell embellishments on the top and seat rails. Look for hand-carved joinery details and age-related patina on the timber.

A pair of French fauteuils can serve as accent seating in a formal drawing room, flanking a fireplace or positioned opposite a contemporary sofa to create balance. The carved timber silhouette pairs effectively with both traditional decor and minimalist living spaces as a contrasting element.

Keep timber frames away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to prevent drying or fading, applying beeswax polish occasionally to preserve the finish. For damask upholstery, vacuum gently with a brush attachment and consult a professional restorer for stain removal.
