Gas lighting became widespread in urban areas during the nineteenth century, replacing oil lamps to illuminate municipal streets and private estates. These copper lanterns were engineered to house gas burners, incorporating ventilated top caps to allow heat and combustion fumes to escape while shielding the flame from wind and rain.

Authentic period lanterns were constructed using sheet copper, wrought iron, and heavy flat glass panels. Copper was selected for its durability and resistance to atmospheric corrosion, which gradually oxidises over time to form a distinctive green verdigris patina.
