A Rare Regency Mantel Clock by Des Granges of London

19th century
Description

A quite exceptional and small mantel clock by Des Granges, Late Recordon. Working in Cockspur Street, London.

The double fusee movement strikes and the repeats the hour on a single bell. The silvered brass dial features Roman numerals, strike/silent and matching blued steel hands.

The case is of an unusual design and is delightfully small. There are brass fish scale sound frets to each side and the case stands on ornate brass tapered feet. The top of the case is almost a combination of a bell top and pagoda top together and is finished with a brass carrying handle.

A rare example.

NOTE: This clock has only just recently arrived. The case will require some sympathetic restoration and the movement will be fully serviced and guaranteed for 3 years.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in early 19th-century Britain, Regency bracket clocks typically feature ebonised wood or mahogany cases, brass carrying handles, and arched silvered dials, reflecting the refined neoclassical aesthetics of the era.

These timepieces were constructed using ebonised fruitwood or mahogany cases, silvered brass dials, cast brass feet, carrying handles, and precision steel and brass mechanical movements.

Authentic period examples feature mechanical fusee movements, maker signatures engraved on the dial or backplate, period-appropriate brass fittings displaying natural oxidisation, and hand-engraved arch dials with strike and silent selectors.

Position the timepiece centrally on a fireplace mantelpiece, console table, or within a formal bookcase to create a structured focal point that complements both traditional and contemporary decor.

Keep the timepiece away from direct heat sources and dry environments to prevent timber shrinkage, clean the case gently with a dry microfibre cloth, and ensure the movement is overhauled by a qualified horologist every five to seven years.
