C. Hindley & Sons, formally known as Charles Hindley & Sons, was an important London
furniture-making and decorating firm active throughout the 19th century. The company operated from
around 1820 until 1892, with premises on Berners Street and later at 134 Oxford Street. Their business
expanded significantly in 1844 when they acquired the well known cabinetmakers Miles & Edwards,
allowing them to broaden their offerings in cabinetmaking, upholstery, retail furnishings, and interior
design.
The company’s work was known for its high quality and stylistic variety. Rather than focusing on a
single decorative style, C. Hindley & Sons produced furniture in Gothic Revival, Neoclassical, Louis
revival, and Arts & Crafts styles. They catered to both middle class and wealthier clientele, employing
talented craftsmen and designers. Their output included writing tables, davenports, dining sets,
cabinets, decorative panelling, and chimneypieces, all crafted with attent
...ion to detail and fine joinery.
The firm served a wide range of customers, including members of the aristocracy and occasionally
royal residences such as Buckingham Palace. Their furniture was admired for its quality, balanced
proportions, and refined construction. Numerous surviving examples—such as mahogany davenports,
neoclassical glazed cabinets, reading tables, and Gothic revival pieces— illustrate the lasting appeal of
their craftsmanship.
Although the original company closed in 1892, the Hindley name continued through a successor
business, Hindley & Wilkinson Ltd, founded by descendants of the original family. This later company
operated into the early 20th century before being absorbed into Marshall & Snelgrove. Today, pieces by
C. Hindley & Sons remain valued by collectors, historians, and enthusiasts of Victorian decorative arts.
