Scottish figurative watercolours of this era are characterised by realistic draftsmanship, subdued tonal palettes, and intimate depictions of daily life, music, or studio settings, influenced by both British genre painting and European realism.

Artists utilized water-soluble gum arabic pigments applied in translucent washes over heavy rag paper, frequently rendered with graphite or ink underdrawing to define structure and shadow.

Authentic period watercolours demonstrate age-appropriate paper darkening or foxing, visible hand-painted brushstrokes with varied wash intensity, original artist signatures or monograms, and period-correct mounting marks.

Frame the artwork in a simple dark timber or gilded frame with a generous acid-free mount, placing it on a gallery wall, above a console, or near musical instruments to enhance a classic aesthetic.

Display watercolours away from direct sunlight under UV-protective glass, maintain stable humidity levels to prevent mould growth, and ensure all framing materials are strictly acid-free.
