Maling pottery was established in North East England in the late eighteenth century, becoming famous in the 1920s and 1930s for vibrant transfer-printed and hand-enamelled decorative earthenware. The tulip pattern is characteristic of their Art Deco production, featuring floral motifs paired with iridescent or cobalt glazes.

These pieces were crafted from moulded earthenware clay, finished with white or tinted tin glazes, hand-painted polychrome enamels, and an overglaze iridescent lustre sheen applied before a final firing.

Authentic Maling ceramics feature factory backstamps on the underside, often including the castle logo, Maling Newcastle On Tyne, pattern names, and painted pattern numbers, along with characteristic light glaze crazing.
