Superb French 19thc Bronze Boy & Goose, Ferdinand Barbedienne

A finely patinated French antique bronze by Ferdinand Barbedienne (1810-1892) portraying a a young boy holding a large goose. The sculpture is made after the example of the ''Goose Strangler'' by the ancient Greek sculptor Boëthus. Stamped ‘Reduction Mécanique A. Collas Brevete’ on the goose’s tail. The figure stands on a heavy marble and bronze base. Ca. 34.5cm high (40cm incl. base), 24cm wide x 26cm deep, weight: bronze 5.5kg, base 7.45kg (total 12.95kg).
 
Excellent condition and patina.
 
Ferdinand Barbedienne was a famous French metal worker and manufacturer, who presided over one of the most renowned and prolific foundries of Belle Époque Paris. Barbedienne’s atelier created sculptures, clocks and bronze mounts of the highest quality and his works were shown at numerous international exhibitions of the period, where he won multiple awards. Among these was the noteworthy Grande Médaille d''Honneur, which Barbedienne won in Paris in 1855.
