Qashqa''i rugs don''t come much earlier than this!
Made during the second half of the nineteenth century, the rug oozes nomadic life, depicting a single woman - left-centre - and various animals and birds depicted throughout. The stylised woman was probably the weaver herself! Two large Qashqa''i tribal emblems dominate the central indigo-blue field and all the natural colours are just beautifully saturated. Note too, the four corner spandrels are all decorated differently.
A magnificent example of the best of early Qashqa''i work, possibly made by the Kashkuli sub-tribe, in very good overall condition and a good, small, desirable size.
