Description

Charming and archaic, this truly tribal salt-bag, 'namakdan' in Persian, was made by Kurdish tribes in Kurdistan during the last quarter of the nineteenth century.

With an '8-pointed star' dominating the central field and symbolising protection, the bag has a lustrous knotted pile and was probably made by a Kurdish nomad who had limited amount of spare wool in her possession as it appears she has used all the wool at her disposal! Note the abrash of natural un-dyed wool in the centre and the additional ivory border at the base of the bag. Was she experimenting with border patterns at this point? I also love the very stylised depiction of a human figure with stylised animals on either side at the base of the neck!

The back of the bag is woven in narrow, horizontal bands of plain-weave.

A great little namakdan, made in the most tribal way.
