Pair of Royal Worcester “Fallen Fruits” Ewers by R. Seabright, 1908

1900 - 1920
Description

A decorative pair of Royal Worcester porcelain ewers dated 1908, painted in the “Fallen Fruits” manner by Richard Seabright. The malachite-green ground, with subtle leaf veining and raised gilding, provides a rich backdrop for Seabright’s fruit studies of apples, grapes and blossom. The classical ewer forms, with serpent handles and gilt cartouches, give the pair strong visual presence.

Seabright signed examples on complex shapes such as these are seldom encountered, as much of his work was confined to plates and trays. This matched pair is therefore of particular interest to collectors of Worcester fruit painting.

?

Historical Background

Richard Seabright (1870–1951) spent over fifty years at Royal Worcester and is highly regarded for his refined, atmospheric fruit studies. Pairs of painted ewers were prestige objects often produced for exhibition or high-end retail orders during the Edwardian period.
