Owen Bowen (1873–1967), “Cottage Garden”, Watercolour, 1922

A charming early 20th-century watercolour by listed British artist Owen Bowen (1873–1967). Titled “Cottage Garden” (per Jorgensen Fine Art label), the work depicts a quiet garden path framed by mature shrubs, soft foliage and the gables of old Yorkshire buildings. Bowen’s distinctive loose brushwork and warm, impressionistic palette capture the gentle atmosphere of an English cottage garden in summer.

Owen Bowen (1873–1967) born in Leeds, who attended the High School there. He acquired his artistic training studying with Gilbert Foster and also studied printmaking and pottery design. Although Bowen painted on the continent, he was particularly known for his views of Yorkshire, for he settled in Leeds and established his own school of painting there. Also illustrated books. After World War II he was president of RCamA for a number of years, exhibiting with it prolifically, also with Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, and RA and ROI. Several northern public galleries, including Leeds, Rotherham and Rochdale, hold his work.

Signed and dated 1922 lower right. Mounted and presented in a gilt frame with double mount, supplied by Jorgensen Fine Art, Dublin, whose original labels remain on the reverse providing biographical details and title.
